The Extended Web 2.0 Learning Schools 

It is a fact that the extension of learning beyond the classroom is a long awaited concept to the post-holing of knowledge to deeper understandings. In Web 2.0 extended learning schools these opportunities for the extension of knowledge become realistic when applying participatory Web 2.0 Literacy. Web 2.0 Extended Learning Schools are founded on a different set of standards than those schools founded on traditional practices. The Web 2.0 Extended Learning Schools are places where both the professional educators, students, parents and the community are engaged in active learning based uponLiteracy 2.0 participatory goals. 

In the Web 2.0 school, the role of the educators is to seek out expanded technology based learning opportunities that benefit not only student learning but also the school as a whole and the improvement of the learning process. There are many factors that contribute to the Web 2.0 Extended Learning School, but one of the major factor is the development of a successful curriculum integration plan that adopts new Web 2.0 tools into the Common Core. 

This plan should be designed in a way that inspires people to share their knowledge, collaborate on their knowledge, and finally develop their knowledge into a technology paradigm shift for the future. The new Web 2.0 is different in its architecture for it now offers new applications where learners can share, create and contribute to new knowledge by direct participation rather than receiving passive information. " We are moving away from a world in which some produce and many consume media, toward one in which everyone has a more active stake in the culture that is produced in "The New Alexandrian Libraries of the Future"

The Implications of Classroom Instruction and Open Source Networking Tools will have a major impact on classroom learning.The management skills required of today's educators and curriculum developers will include the ability to assess the importance of networking tools, and to develop methods that support the integration of these new instructional delivery formats within the given standards of the required curriculum.
 
The evolutions of networking instructional formats and open source software applications like Moodle,Skype, DimDim and Voice Thread are creating new issues for school content developers as online learning opportunities become more prevalent among school-aged children.  According to Betül Özkan,and Barbara McKenzie, "Open source social software is defined as software that enables people to collaborate, interact and connect with each other using software whose source code is public and so can be used, modified or re-distributed by its users. On the other hand, social networking websites function like an online community of internet users and focus on members who have a common interest in topics." Many students and parents are beginning to be introduced to the potentials of the expansion of learning outside of the school day to enhance knowledge or to support course work that is being offered by their schools. School officials of the future will be expected to manage and understand the nature of networking technology tools and have the skills to manage them.

We can define social networking as web-based Web 2.0 services that allow teachers and students to (1)construct a student profile within a circumscribed
system, (2) inarticulate a list of other users with whom they collaborate ideas, and (3) view and collaborate a sources of information made by others within the
networked environment. The nature and nomenclature of these collaborations may vary from the central purpose established by the networking site, like Ning who's company mission is to promote the building of a social destination to create a community that fosters conversations. 
To fully appreciate the nature of networking capabilities, the educator must first understand the definitions associated with the instructional formats of networking technologies. Present learning technologies can be separated into two distinct delivery systems of synchronous or asynchronous instruction. Synchronous instruction occurs when the instructor and student's primary interactions are in real-time. Regular classroom instruction is synchronous instruction, as well as two-way interactivevideo.

Web-based instruction that requires real-time interaction between student(s) and instructor as the primary format of instruction is also synchronous instruction. Asynchronous instruction is not dependent on instructor and student interaction in real time. 

Asynchronous instruction allows the student to engage in learning activities anywhere at any time. For instruction to be considered asynchronous, the primary format of instruction does not depend on real-time interaction of theparticipants.

What  is A Wiki?

A Wiki is a read/write web resource that offers comparative benefits to students needing to collaborate in the creation of joint documents, and offers benefits to instructors wanting insights into the respective contributions (or non-contributions) of students in assigned groups. The Wiki software application also keeps record of past versions of created webpage’s and tracks changes which users make to the site.

A wiki is a collaborative website which can be directly edited by anyone with access to it. Ward Cunningham,
developer of the first wiki WikiWikiWeb, originally described it as“the simplest online database that could possibly
work”. One of the best-known wikis is Wikipedia. WikiWikiWeb was the first site to be called a wiki. Ward Cunningham started developing WikiWikiWeb in 1994, and installed it on Internet domain c2.com on March 25, 1995. It was named by Cunningham, who remembered aHonolulu International Airport counter employee telling him to take the so-called “Wiki Wiki”Chance RT-52 shuttle bus line that runs between the airport’s terminals. According to Cunningham, “I chose wiki-wiki as an alliterative substitute for‘quick’ and thereby avoided naming this stuff quick-web.” Wiki Wiki is a reduplication of wiki, a Hawaiian-languageword for fast.

A collection of websites of hypertext, each of them can be visited and edited by anyone. “Wiki wiki” means “rapidly” in the Hawaiian language.

An online collaboration model and tool that allows any user to edit some content of webpage’s through a simple browser.

A wiki  is a web application that allows users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. Wiki also refers to the collaborative software used to create such a website (see pbwiki software)

Creating A Classroom Wiki

A wiki is a great place for students to collaborate on projects and is the foundation interface for content development. To get started just open an account and begin by selecting a thematic name for your wiki site. As a teacher you can assign each student their own page on which they can posthole information for an in-depth study on assigned content. Teachers can construct a resource page where you store support information for your thematic unit, give alternative assignments that reinforce classroom content or assign students a page where they can create information collaboratively as a team.

You can assign separate pages for students, write book reviews, and create a classroom newsletter reporting their project progress. Additional pages can be developed to collect hyperlinks that enhance the curriculum, a social studies page with text and  images with geographical locations using Google Earth and a math real world story problem page (with answers). You can also create a page where students post their writing and responses or provide teacher notes on topics currently being discussed in the classroom. Another idea is to create a class picture book showing students actively engaged in creating and learning on their collaborative projects.

To keep the privacy of your classroom activities from being viewed by the outside world, you have the security capabilities to lock and unlock pages, as well as to decide what parts of your wiki will be protected by read or write permissions.  PBWiki also has built in plug-ins to create widgets that you can add embedded codes to store videos, polls, slide shows, calendars, podcast RSS feeds, music, and documents.  To get started with a classroom wiki just simply  divide your class into groups of 4-6 students.  Assign each group one page to create and another to edit. Encourage everyone to help on any page.  

What is Skype?

Skype, is an open source software program that allows  anyone to talk to anyone else in the world over the Internet for free. The  software program is easy to install and can be downloaded at the following site.  People and classrooms around the globe are using Skype as a part of their daily  communication plans to keep in touch with friends, classmates, classrooms and  family member with a clearer as a cell phone voice connection. You can easily ad  a webcam for video connection to see the person or classroom you are visiting  with. You can have as many as 9 users on an audio only conference call. Just  imagine the benefits of creating classrooms without walls.

Classroom Usage
Skype's ease-of-use and video conferencing capability make it a hugely beneficial tool in helping students connect with others outside of the classroom walls. The greatest benefits for classroom use is  that teachers can quickly and easily invite guests from all over the world to speak to their students. Additionally, social studies and foreign language teachers can use Skype to connect with classes in other countries to share experiences in their native language and language arts teachers, with the help of the school librarian can connect with the authors to share and read literature. A science teacher from another school or university could use Skype's video and audio resources connections to demonstrate the scientific process through various lab experiments.  A zoologist could share the  habitats of different animals while a doctor could discuss the impotent's of  sustaining a healthy lifestyle. 

Downside
Skype is an easy to use a free teleconferencing conferencing software program that has been noted to use up school network resources. Used wisely with the right notification schedule to the Districts Information Technology Department would ease some bandwidth stress  on the schools network during low peak times.  Also schedules and time zones can  limit the ability to arrange for a call with an invited guest who is outside a  classrooms meeting time.

Want to hold a  Skype conference, or teleconference to a distant place and need to know what  time it is in the place your are calling; paste the widget Time-In.info code into your Wiki or blog. Just  simply replace the word "Japan" with your own location and copy/paste the code  into your plug-in or blog/website html reader. The Time-In.info clock widget is  the most clean, simple, and easy way to put information from any place in the  world on your website.

What Do I Need to Go Skyping?
To have a  successful Skype you will need just four key components, an internet connection, a microphone/ headset, video camera and the link or location to start 
downloading the software. The last step is to Install Skype which only takes  only a few minutes. Just go to the Skype Download page  and click the Download button and Follow the directions for downloading Skype  onto your computer.

Dimdim is an open source web-based meeting solution along the lines of
WebEx, GotoMeeting or Raindance. With Dimdim service you can freely host meetings with up to 20 participants and you can show Presentations, Applications and Desktops to any other person over the internet. You can chat, show your webcam and talk with others in the meeting. If you have used Skype then you have a bit of an idea of what Dimdim does, what is different is that you can share presentation software. Dimdim also supports video conferencing.
